The Best Plush Hybrid Mattresses

Candace Osmond

Hybrid mattresses are beds that bring together a variety of different materials so that the sleeper can enjoy the benefits brought forth by each of them. These mattresses are often confused with innerspring beds because they have a pocketed coil support system, but they are different in terms of construction and the level of support and comfort they offer. Today, we’re going to take an in-depth look at what makes a good hybrid mattress, as well as look at some of the plushiest hybrids that the market has to offer.

Inside the Hybrid Mattress

As we mentioned earlier, a lot of people tend to mistake hybrid beds for innerspring ones, so let’s look at some of the characteristics of a hybrid bed.

The comfort layer of a hybrid made measures at least two inches and should have latex or foam.  Certain mattresses even come with gel infusion to counteract some of that heat retention that’s specific to foam, but what’s important to keep in mind is that hybrids have a minimum of two inches in the upper layer, or else they can be considered innerspring beds.

A common characteristic of hybrid beds in the presence of a pillow-top, which is sewn on the top side of the comfort layer. Due to the gap between the comfort layer and its bottom side, it has a pillow-like resemblance. Mattresses with a pillow-top are chosen for their additional level of coziness, as the top is almost always plush and offers that hugging-like sensation.

Density is in that mattress terminology dictionary and knowing more about it can help you choose a better mattress. If a hybrid bed is made with foam in any of the layers, you should find information about the foam’s density, which is a measurement of the foam’s responsiveness (a.k.a. how much pressure you can put on the material and still have it offer great support). The density of a block of foam can be low, medium, or high, and it is measured in pounds per cubic foot.

Ok, but what does this all mean, you ask? If you choose a mattress that has low-grade memory foam, it means that you will benefit from good motion isolation and contouring, high-grade foam does the same but takes longer to return to its original shape, and medium-grade foam is in the middle between the two. In a hybrid mattress, you are likely to find multiple foam densities in the comfort layer.

ILD is short for “indentation load deflection” and it roughly measures how firm a mattress is. When you spot a high IDL, that means the mattress is firm. The best-selling hybrid beds come with comfort layers that have an ILD of at least 2.2 pounds per cubic inch.

Gauge is a reflection of how thick the coils used to make the support layer of a hybrid bed are. Keep in mind that when we’re talking about coil gauge, a high number represents a thinner coil. You will find that most hybrid beds have pocketed coils with gauges between 12 and 18 (with 18 being the thinnest). Hybrid beds are usually constructed with thin coils that are wrapped up individually and provide many benefits to the sleeper because of that. First of all, the space between the coils facilitates airflow and prevents the mattress from overheating. These coils tend to be better at motion isolation too, since they aren’t connected like coils inside an innerspring bed are.

What Does a Hybrid Bed Feel Like?

Mattresses are usually made with one, maybe two different types of materials in their construction. Hybrid beds are special because they can combine up to three, maybe even four of these materials in their construction, so we have to talk about their key characteristics and what makes them so unique:

  • Hybrids are decent at motion isolation. They are not as good as foam beds, but they are not as bad as innerspring ones. As we mentioned earlier, the pocketed coils inside a hybrid mattress go a long way in helping with that, making these beds pretty decent at absorbing motion without having one moving sleeper disturb their sleeping partner.
  • They are a mattress category that’s excellent for hot sleepers. Most hybrids that utilize foam in the comfort layers have some sort of infusion that prevents overheating. The pocketed coil support has space between the coils, allowing air to pass through instead of having it stuck close to the surface of the bed.
  • One of the things that set hybrids apart from other beds is the fact that they can conform to the shape of the sleeper’s body, but they are also responsive enough to make it easy to move around in bed, switch between sleeping positions, or get in and out of bed with ease. Some of the best mattresses for alleviating pain are hybrids.

Aside from latex beds, which can last up to 8.5 years, hybrids are the longest-lasting types of mattresses on the market, with an average lifespan of about 7 years.

Who Needs a Plush Mattress?

Now that we know a little more about hybrid beds, it’s time to move on to the other pressing matter: who are plush beds designed for? If you’re not sure whether or not you need a soft mattress, here are some things to keep in mind:

If you are a back sleeper, you probably know that this position already keeps the spine in its natural state, so you don’t need a mattress with that much conforming. If you sleep on the side, you need more support in the hips, lower back, shoulders, and neck area if you are to reduce pressure, which makes a softer mattress better for you. If you sleep on the stomach, a plush mattress will allow your pelvic area to sink into the surface of the bed way too much, eventually causing pain and discomfort.

Weight is another important factor to keep in mind when you’re looking at a bed’s firmness level. Lightweight sleepers are considered those that weigh under 130 pounds, average-weight sleepers weigh between 130 and 230 pounds, while those that weigh more than 230 pounds are considered to be heavyweight sleepers. Dividing sleepers into these three categories is important for one reason only: the mattress’ layers react differently under different levels of pressure (or bodyweight) and if you understand how, you will be able to choose a bed that’s right for you. In general, lightweight and average-weight sleepers are the ones that will benefit most from a plush mattress because their bodies will sink into the surface of the bed just right. Heavyweight sleepers will sink into the bed too much, find it difficult to switch sleeping positions, and will not get the level of support their body needs.

Best Plush Hybrid Mattresses

When you’re looking to buy a new mattress, the firmness level is one of the first things to pay attention to, as it will determine how soft or hard the mattress is depending on your weight, height, and favorite sleeping position. Soft or plush beds usually have a firmness rating of 4.5 or lower, so if you’re looking to buy a plush hybrid mattress, here are some products that are good for their price.

The WinkBed

Specs:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Mattress height: 14.5 inches
  • Construction: 1″ 1.5 PCF Polyfoam + 1″ 1.5 PCF Gel Polyfoam  + 2 1/2″ Foam-encased Pocketed Microcoils +    7 1/2″ Pocketed Coils + 2″ 1.8 PCF Polyfoam Encasement

Best for couples

The WinkBed is one of the best hybrid beds we’ve seen so far, there’s no doubt about it. It is available in pretty much every firmness level you could ask for: the Soft model has a firmness rating of 4.5/10, the Luxury Firm is ranked at 6.5/10, the Firm mattress is 7.5/10, while the Plus bed is a solid 8/10.  If you opt for the plush version of this bed, you will get a mattress that impresses you from the get-go due to the soft, stretchable, and highly-breathable Tencel lyocell fabric.

Then, you will find a two-part pillow-top later that brings together 1 inch of polyfoam and another inch of polyfoam infused with gel. These two comfort layers are combined with 2.5 inches of pocketed micro coils that are encased in foam and combined with an additional cotton lumbar pad so that your lower back gets the support it needs. The support core of the bed is made from a 7.5-inch layer of pocketed coils, encased in 2 inches of polyfoam. The WinkBed is considered to be a high-profile mattress, since it measures 14.5 inches in thickness.

When you look at the big picture, you learn to understand that the WinkBed is excellent from a lot of different standpoints. First of all, it offers excellent edge support, but ranks high in other aspects that might be important to you, like durability, temperature neutrality, motion isolation, or pressure relief. As long as you choose the right firmness for you, you can’t go wrong with the WinkBed.

Pros

  • 4 firmness options.
  • Excellent edge support.
  • Sleeps cool.
  • Great motion isolation.
  • Long-term durability.

Cons

  • Slight off-gassing.

Who Should Buy This?

Since the WinkBed is available in four different firmness options, it has a variant that’s suitable for a different sleeping category, so you could say anyone could benefit from it. It’s a great option for couples that share a bed, or for those with limited mobility that have trouble getting in and out of bed.

  • Mattress height: 12 inches
  • Construction: 3″ Talalay Latex + 8″ Pocketed Coils + 1″ HD Polyfoam

Best for hot sleepers

There are so many things that left us speechless when it comes to the Bloom Hybrid bed. We knew that hybrid mattresses rank high in temperature neutrality, but the design of the Bloom takes it off the charts. It comes with a cover that combines organic cotton and Joma wool, offering natural moisture-wicking properties and excellent breathability. It has a 3-inch comfort layer that’s made from Talalay latex, being capable of contouring to the sleeper’s body to just the right level. The ventilated design of Talalay latex makes the comfort layer highly breathable. The core of the bed lies in the 8 inches of pocketed coils, and comes with a base layer of high-density polyfoam that measures 1 inch in height.

Adding up to a total of 12 inches, the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid mattress has a firmness rating of 5 out of possible 10, but trust us when we say it’s a plush mattress that feels amazing to many different sleepers. When it comes to analyzing other aspects of a mattress, we can tell you that the Bloom bed is as cool as it is durable, has minimal off-gassing, provides great pressure relief, and offers a good amount of edge support. The only annoying thing about it is that it tends to be a bit noisier than other hybrid beds.

Pros

  • Excellent durability.
  • Sleeps very cool.
  • Good edge support.
  • Good motion isolation.

Cons

  • A bit noisy.

Who Should Buy This?

If you often wake up at night feeling hot and sweating a lot, know that the Bloom mattress is designed with plenty of naturally cooling materials and a pocketed coil support layer that facilitates airflow.

When it comes to making quality plush hybrid beds, Brooklyn Bedding seems to be on a roll. We loved to see what the Spartan hybrid model had to offer, so we wanted to go through the specs together with our readers so that you can judge the quality and features of the mattress yourself. First of all, make sure that if you’re looking to buy a plush bed, you choose the Soft version of the Spartan, which has a firmness rating of 3.5 out of 10 (the other two options are the Medium bed and the Firm one, with 5.5 and 7.5 firmness ratings respectively).

The cover of the Spartan bed is as rare as the one on the Bear mattress: it’s a Nanobionic R-3 performance fabric that uses the heat of your body, converts it too far-infrared energy, and then reflects it to the body so that you can recover for physical exertion or injuries faster. The comfort layers consist of 1.5 inches of copper-infused foam, plus another 2 inches of TitanFlex polyfoam. There is an 8-inch pocketed coils support system with a 1-inch layer of gel-infused foam on top of it, and another inch of high-density foam underneath it.

Standing at 13.5 inches tall, the Spartan hybrid bed is a titan when it comes to pressure relief and temperature neutrality. The soft version is just perfect for lightweight sleepers, regardless of their favorite sleeping position.

Pros

  • Excellent pressure relief.
  • Excellent temperature neutrality.
  • Good durability.
  • Multiple firmness options.

Cons

  • Pretty expensive.
  • Noticeable off-gassing.

Who Should Buy This?

The Spartan hybrid mattress is a plush bed worth buying if you often wake up with pain caused by pressure points due to a firm mattress, if you tend to sweat a lot during the night, or if you are physically active/recovering from an injury/accident.

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King, Split Cal King
  • Mattress height: 13.5 inches
  • Construction:  0.4″ 4 PCF Gel-Infused Memory Foam + 3″ 3.5 PCF TitanChill Endurance Foam + 1″ 3 PCF SmartFlow Foam + 8″ Pocketed Coils + 1″ 3 PCF Polyfoam

Best overall

As mattress nerds, we always get hyped up when we spot a cool product that ticks all the right boxes on our list, and that’s what we did when we discovered the Alexander Signature hybrid bed in our quest to find the very best plush hybrid mattress. The Signature hybrid debuts with a cover made from phase-changing material for more cooling.

The comfort system of the bed is made from three different layers: one measures 0.4 inches and it’s made from gel-infused memory foam, the second is a 3-inch layer of TitanChill Endurance polyfoam, while the last layer of the comfort system is a 1-inch layer of SmartFlow polyfoam. What is amazing and must be mentioned here is that you have a zipper that grants you access to these layers, so you can swipe them for others if you’re not happy with the firmness level of the bed.

The support core of the mattress is made from 8 inches of pocketed coils, protected by a 1-inch base of polyfoam underneath. When you add all of this up, you get a 13.5-inch mattress that’s available in three firmness options, with the softest one being a 3 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Due to the construction and materials of choice, we’re dealing with a mattress that’s great at keeping away body heat, is durable, and offers great edge support. If there’s anything you might dislike about this bed is the fact that you can feel a little bit of movement if you share a bed with someone else.

Pros

  • Good edge support.
  • Great temperature neutrality.
  • Durable.
  • Customisable firmness.

Cons

  • Average motion isolation.

Who Should Buy This?

The plush version of the Signature mattress is great for lightweight side sleepers, for those two tend to sleep hot, but also for couples that share a bed with a partner of a different weight category (the company allows you customize the bed to two different firmness levels for each side of the bed if you purchase a King or a Cal King version).
